A Journey Through the Landscape September 01 2022
An Exhibition of Paintings & Prints by Colin Carruthers
1st September - 29th September 2022
Colin will be at the Gallery for his BOOK LAUNCH
on Saturday 24th September from 12 pm - 4 pm
Colin Carruthers was born in Antrim Town in Northern Ireland, where he spent his early childhood. He showed and interest in drawing at an early age and was encourage by his mother to draw and paint In the mid 1970s, he moved with his family to Germany. His family relocated later to Oxfordshire and Colin formed a good rapport with his art teacher, Mrs Ritson. Drawing was part of her practice, and she nurtured his interest, showing him her own sketchbooks containing tree studies. She would take Colin and other pupils out on field trips to sketch the local landscape, gave him valuable early lessons in painting and helped him to paint with oils for the first time.
Colin continued his interest with drawing and painting, but it wasn't until 1992 that he applied to do a Foundation Course in Art and Design. He successfully completed the course, followed by a B.A. Honours degree in Fine Art at U.C.E., Margaret Street in Birmingham. It was in the final year of his degree course that Colin discovered that painting was the ultimate vehicle to share with others how he emotionally felt about the world we live in. He realised that he wanted to become a painter.

Introducing New Ceramics by Lou Hall June 10 2021

Louise Hall completed a Masters Degree at Nottingham Trent University in July 2012, following on from a BA in ‘Decorative Arts’. She works with porcelain to create fragile and delicate looking hand built forms and vessels. By exploring the materiality of porcelain she has learnt how to push this wonderful material to its maximum. Detail is added from different colours and textures to create the illusion of fabric or paper or anything un-claylike .
Lou's latest collection includes mugs and plates, with a specific colour palette. She has continued to be inspired by the delicate material itself and has succeeded in creating durable and functional products.

New Purple Gallery Artist October 15 2020
We are pleased to soon be introducing new paintings to the Gallery by local artist Richard Otford Russell. Richard was born in Alvechurch, Worcestershire. He excelled in art at school but his career took a very different path.

He continued, however, to pursue his love of painting and attended evening classes so as to cultivate his talent in landscape painting.
Richard says: "This recent series of paintings were created at an extraordinary time in world events when I had time to get out and enjoy the exceptional Spring weather. I revisited the places I had discovered in my youth. Fladbury and Pershore lie in close proximity to each other along the River Avon. I remember kayaking on this stretch of the river. It was utterly idyllic. Shimmering water bathed in sunshine with Swallows and Dragonflies darting around us".
There will be four of Richard's wonderfully atmospheric watercolour paintings available at our Christmas Show which opens at 10 am on Saturday 14th November 2020. The show continues (following a short break for Christmas) until the end of January 2021.

Wes Anderson's Dog - Walthamstow Stadium July 31 2020
Mychael Barratt has been working as a printmaker since 1991 and amongst his many achievements has written and had published his own book on intaglio printmaking. He has produced a unique series of Artists’ Dogs and Cat etchings – which are proving to be very popular and resulting in sell-out editions. Mychael is a narrative artist who illustrates incidents from everyday life and his sense of humour is evidenced throughout his prints and paintings.
One of Mychael's latest prints in this fun series of artists' dogs and cat prints, is a larger silkscreen print - Wes Anderson's Dog - Walthamstow Stadium. Wesley Anderson is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. His films are known for their eccentricity and distinctive visual and narrative styles and he is regarded by some critics as a modern-day example of the auteur.
Purple Gallery will also be exhibiting some of Mychael's new smaller prints in this wonderful, fun series, at The Little Picture Show, which opens on Saturday 29th August and continues until 17th October 2020.

New Purple Gallery Printmaker May 09 2020
We have just received some new original prints into the gallery by printmaker Louise Davies. Louise is both a painter and a printmaker who has been creating from a young age. She graduated with a Fine Art Degree from St Martins and completed an M.A. in Printmaking from Camberwell College of Art. She is a member of the Royal Society of Painter and Printmakers and was awarded the Curwen Print Prize in 2012 and the Zenith Print Purchase Prize in 2013. She is currently a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and her work is permanently on show at the Bankside Gallery, situated close to the Tate Modern.
Louise's prints are primarily concerned with the landscape. Some are based on childhood memories, reflecting on the countryside and coast of the west of England. Other have evolved from small paintings and drawings done on location from sketch books. She has a strong use of colour combined with an individual and sensitive line drawing which she uses to create a visual language for her prints and paintings. Louise uses layers of translucent colour and calligraphic marks to emphasis the fluidity of the ever changing elements of nature.
Louise is inspired by artists such as Rothko - with his strong use of colour to communicate a mood, and Miro - with his whimsical use of lines. Click here to View Louise's prints>>>

The Arrival of Spring! March 05 2020
Our new Spring exhibition draws together paintings, ceramics, sculpture and jewellery from both new and established Purple Gallery artists. Our featured artist Giuliana Lazzerini, was born in Seravezza near Pietrasanta in Tuscany. She studied at the Instituto D’Arte Stagio Stagi in Pietrasanta, gaining a Master of Arts Diploma. This was followed by a further four years studying painting at the Accademia di Belle Art.Giuliana divides her time between painting (oils, acrylics and watercolours) and printmaking. The Tuscan landscape and childhood memories still bear a strong influence upon Giuliana’s current work. In an earlier statement she describes her first encounters with art in Italy as a child in her father’s mosaic studio. She refers to the “translucency of the mosaic fragment” and her “fascination with the vibrancy of colour” from the juxta positioning of the pieces. These early perceptions, several years on, provide a language and a vocabulary for her pictures in terms of colour, surface, scale of which she uses in the construction of her tapestry-like, interlocking, angular-surfaced village landscapes.
On show throughout the Spring, we have eight new vibrant paintings along with a wide selection of Giuliana's linoprints.

Seascape Vessels February 27 2020
Paula Downing's slabbed, pinched and coiled ceramics take clay back to its origins in the erosion and decomposition of rock. The volcanic finishes, deeply pitted surfaces, fissures, splits, stopes and rugged, monolithic shapes in her work mirror the natural actions of geology, and celebrate standing stones, way markers, forts, and the huge impact of ancient civilisations on the Cornish landscape.
ARTIST STATEMENT: "Living on a rugged strip of land in the Atlantic, the pull of the wild as muse is impossible for the artist to ignore. Its form, colour and evolution are as dramatic as anything the imagination can conjure. Hopefully, my work is a direct, honest and respectful response to the world that remains unchanged by modern humankind".
Paula is a member of the following societies:The Craft Potters Association, The Penwith Society, The Cornwall Crafts Association and The Cornwall Ceramics and Glass Group.
Bird Calling! February 19 2020
The discovery of a packet of clay in the back of a cupboard in early 2019 was the first step towards artist
Paul Robinson taking a wildly different approach to his art.
Paul Robinson is first and foremost a painter, with his work included in collections worldwide. However, the thought of experimenting with a new medium was irresistible, and he loved the idea of trying something new.
When he came to making the armature on which to build the clay, he found this initial part of the process of manipulating the wire far more fascinating than working with the clay itself, and so quickly decided to abandon the clay altogether. Although, that’s not say it won’t make a reappearance in the future!
Each piece starts as a simple shape, and then begins hours of painstakingly forming each figure, working instinctively, and allowing the ideas to develop naturally, taking whichever direction they might choose.
We currently have sculptures and signed, limited edition prints in stock and there will be new paintings available by Paul at our 15th Anniversary Summer Show opening on Saturday 4th July 2020.

Canal Paintings by Colin Carruthers September 05 2019
Artist Colin Carruthers has recently been exploring Birmingham's canals which he has found inspirational. "Walking into the centre of Birmingham along the second City's towpaths, gives you an insight into the history of an industry from a bye-gone age. Isn't it amazing", says Colin, "that you can be in a built-up City like Birmingham, yet walk a short distance down onto the local canal network and step into 'another world'. For me, it is wonderful to see the wildlife surrounding the canals.......Herons and other wild birds along with wild flowers by the water's edge. It's also a delight, to get an insight into the life of people living in the narrowboats that frequent the waterways. It's like being transported into another world".
The significance of light and shade in creating an atmosphere, play an important part in Colin’s work and he is particularly interested in the interplay of light between water and sky.
The first series of Colin's canal paintings will be available at the Purple Gallery Autumn Exhibition which runs from Saturday 7th September until Saturday 9th November, 2019.

Elsie and the Three Naked Trees August 28 2019
"The man on the radio said there'd be just a slight breeze; tell that to Elsie and the three naked trees"!
We've just taken delivery of 8 fabulous new paintings by Paul Robinson - in readiness for our Autumn Exhibition which opens on Saturday 7th September.
Paul Robinson grew up in the Cumbrian village of Lazonby, in the heart of the Eden Valley. Moving to London, he became a successful illustrator, working for many publications including The Sunday Times, Radio Times and Time Out magazine, whilst also exhibiting at The Thumb Gallery in London’s Soho. Eventually moving away from the world of commissioned work, Paul began to develop his own projects, pursuing his fascination for the City (of London) and its workers.
Having moved to Norfolk in 1999, he now has a whole new world to explore; in contrast to the City with it’s high rise office blocks to the Norfolk landscape consisting of an immeasurable expanse of sea and sky, Paul admits it proved quite a challenge.
But with not a city worker in sight, he has now turned his attention to the subjects on his door-step to fuel his imagination - the result being a wonderful new series of paintings which give us a quirky and humorous snapshot of everyday life on and around the North Norfolk coast. Paul Robinson’s work is included in private, corporate and public collections, worldwide.
Some of Paul's signed, limited edition giclee prints are also available at Purple Gallery.
Supermoon! August 20 2019
We have just returned from a trip to visit Dionne Sievewright, to collect new paintings for our Autumn Exhibition.
Dionne was born in 1973 in Perth, Scotland and graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone, Dundee in 1997 with BDes. (Hons.) Degree in Illustration and Printmaking. The influence of her wide experience in illustration and design and in particular working as a textile designer in the Italian fashion house, Missoni, can be detected in her approach to landscapes and still life paintings.
A love of colour and texture are obvious in Dionne's vibrant and dramatic paintings - inspired by the changing seasons seen in the landscape of Scotland, South West England and South Wales - where she now has her studio.
