Amanda Ray Raku Fired Jewellery

Artists statement:

"Originally from Surrey, I have spent most of my life in St Ives since my family moved here in the early 70s. In 1992, whilst managing St Ives Ceramics for potter John Bedding, I was given the opportunity to learn raku firing. I set up my own workshop in 1995 to produce jewellery full-time.

A member of the Cornwall Crafts Association since 1993, I have exhibited in over 50 galleries throughout the UK, as well as in Australia, Germany, France and Italy. In 2005, I was invited to work as studio assistant to Pietro Maddalena at La Meridiana International School of Ceramics in Tuscany. I spent five months helping to run pottery workshops and, whilst there, I was encouraged to develop my own work and experiment with many different firing techniques. On my return to the UK I joined the Gaolyard Studios, St Ives, where I currently work alongside seven other ceramicists.

I was inspired by contemporary paintings and sculpture. I was also drawn to the strong geometric lines synonymous with those of the Art Deco period, so combining these two influences felt like a natural place from which to start"
